Ecclesiastical Museum of Athienou 'Archbishop Georgios'


The Ecclesiastical Museum of Athienou 'Archbishop Georgios' was inaugurated on July 18, 2025 and is located next to the Church of Panagia Chryseleousa in Athienou, with exhibits that reflect the deep faith of the people of Athienou; their Orthodox, ecclesiastical and living traditions from the past 600 years.
Its collections consist of ecclesiastical objects such as: icons, ecclesiastical vessels (chalices, hexapetrygas, lamps, censers, Gospels, etc.), manuscripts, old liturgical books, woodcarvings, embroideries, priestly vestments, and the like, which date from the late 15th to the 21st century and originate from Athienou’s churches:
- Church of Panagia Chryseleousa, 1947–1959
- Chapel of Panagia (Old Church), 15th century
- Chapel of Saint Phocas, 1885–1887
- Chapel of Saint George,1860
The collections are further enriched with items from the personal ecclesiastical collection of George III of Cyprus (Archbishop of Cyprus), who was born in Athienou. Items include: episcopal vestments, bishop’s staffs, episcopal engolpia (pectoral icons), gifts from Primates of Churches, archetypes, liturgical vessels, a stamp collection with religious themes, a coin collection (from the British colonial period and the Republic of Cyprus), and a collection of decorated and undecorated ceramics from the Holy Archdiocese of Cyprus, spanning from the Bronze Age (2600–1050 BC) to the Roman period (30 BC – 330 AD).
